Sportpesa cup

The SportPesa Cup is an annual football tournament created and sponsored by bookmakers SportPesa, which pits teams in East Africa against one another in one full week of high class football action.

The first edition of the SportPesa SuperCup took place in June, 2017 at the Uhuru Stadium in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. The winner inaugural edition, Gor Mahia, played against English Premier League side Everton at the National Stadium in Dar Es Salaam

The second edition of the regional football tourney pitting East Africa’s finest teams took place from 3rd -10th June 2018. Eight teams, four from Kenya and four from Tanzania, participated in the 2018 edition.

Gor Mahia from Kenya, were crowned the champions of the tournament and thereafter played against Everton at Goodison Park in UK on 6th Nov 2018.

The third edition of the SportPesa Cup tournament, formerly SportPesa Super Cup, will be held in Dar es Salaam between January 22-27, 2019 tournament sponsor SportPesa has announced. Mombasa-based Bandari FC will make its debut at the knockout Tournament that will feature eight teams from Kenya and Tanzania. Bandari had an impressive performance in the last season of the SportPesa Premier League, rising to a historic position two after Gor Mahia, to earn a slot in invitational tournament.

The SportPesa Cup Tournament this year will feature teams from Kenya and Tanzania, with each country providing four teams. The Kenyan teams are SPL champions Gor Mahia, second-placed Bandari FC, SportPesa Shield winners Kariobangi Sharks and AFC Leopards. Tanzania will be represented by the 2017/2018 Tanzania Premier League winners Simba SC, Yanga SC, Singida United and Mbao FC.

The winner of the tournament will get a chance to host English Premier League club Everton for a friendly in their country, making it the second time that the Toffees will visit East Africa.

Shaban Odhoji

He got sparks on his hands. Shaban, kept a clean sheet in the SportPesa Cup 2018 and was awarded with the Golden Glove helping his team retain the title unbeaten.

The outstanding players at the 2019 SportPesa Cup in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania came from four different teams for the first time in tournament history. William Wadri of Bandari FC gave the tournament a clinic in attacking with the Ugandan named the Most Valuable Player. The trio of Wadri, Duke Abuya (Kariobangi Sharks FC) and Amisi Tambwe (Yanga SC) shared the Golden Boot for top scoring with two apiece. Debutants Mbao FC went home with the pride of producing the Golden Glove winner in Metacha Mnata who only conceded once in four games from open play.
